Welcome to GatherDC's Fundraiser for HIAS
Many of us are lucky. We have no idea what it is like for our world to be turned upside down by war, or how it feels to be forced to flee our homelands simply for being who we are.
But 65 million people around the world today are not so lucky. In fact, we are in the midst of the worst refugee crisis the world has seen since World War II. 1 out of every 122 people on earth today has been displaced from their homes--many of them forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
That’s why GatherDC has started this fundraiser. We want to pool the resources of DC's Jewish 20s & 30s to help the world’s most vulnerable refugees, the people HIAS is working to protect--including ethnic, religious and sexual minorities.
HIAS provides a safe environment for refugees living in camps or on the margins of cities, and assists those who are resettled in the U.S. and other countries. HIAS also advocates in the U.S. and internationally for laws that protect the human rights of refugees. They’ve been helping refugees for more than 130 years!
We chose HIAS because it is an organization, based in DC, guided by Jewish values and our people’s historical experience of migration and flight. It’s the only global Jewish organization whose mission is to help refugees whoever and wherever they are.
At a time when millions of people around the world are risking their lives in search of safety and freedom, we felt compelled to act in a way that would make a real difference. We invite you to join us.
